If you have not yet heard of Simply Seoul Kitchen and Hannah Chung, chances are you are blissfully buying your value priced Super Hmart Kimchi, and happily unaware of this pricier, as-good-as-yo-Korean-Umma’s variety available in several farmers markets and select Whole Foods Markets across Metro Atlanta. *live outside of Atlanta? Never fear! Available online on the Simply Seoul Kitchen website*
Its a hard sell to most Korean Atlantans used to getting kimchi on the cheap, but few of us can argue the fact that the very best tasting kimchi is homemade, grandma-style kimchi (because lets admit it, a good percentage of our first generation Korean American moms stopped making kimchi at home a long time ago, and if they still make it, the crowning praise is that its just as good as Halmuni’s kimchi)–and that is exactly what comes out of Simply Seoul Kitchen. For this gold standard fare, you must part with $9.99 for a 16 oz jar (with a slightly discounted rate at farmers markets).
I am particularly partial to the all natural, vegan, and mostly locally sourced ingredients that Hannah uses as I have a shellfish allergy and relish the fresh quality of all her products. Hannah also leaves out MSG, a common agent in mass produced Kimchi–yet so unnecessary considering theres plenty of natural umani goodness in this fermented dish!
Yes, for those reasons and because of the convenient proximity for this in town dweller, I drop the pretty penny on this high class Kimchi to feed our Kimchi lovin’ family.
Where else in Atlanta can you buy “all that” in a jar?
