Like most young children, my toddler is obsessed with airplanes. Any time an airplane or helicopter flies by is reason for pause and a quick survey of the skies. Two of his favorite toys are his helicopter and lego airplane. He even scored an airplane pin from our Delta attendant during his first flight for good behavior.
So how convenient is it that there happens to be an airplane park in close proximity to our home? Located inside the Dekalb Peachtree Airport, is a small park with playground, field, and viewing area right by the runway. Kids can run a muck in a child proof area all while watching biplanes take off. Brilliant! And you know what’s even better? A free airshow that’s what. PDK will be hosting its annual airshow on May 17 from 12 – 5pm. Admission is free but parking is $10 per vehicle. We will be there with toddler and infant in tote. My son is going to lose is mind.
You can even ride of one these bad boys for a price. Flights can be booked through these companies:
Sometimes you’ll see some aviation enthusiasts hanging out in the observation deck with their scanners. My advice? Sit nearby and strike up a conversation. You’ll learn a ton of aviation terms and history in just 10 minutes.
Okay so the playground itself is not very exciting. It’s geared toward younger kids with a simple slide, climbing bars, and swings. But hey! you just saw 5 planes take off on the other side of the fence. Just make sure you bring sunscreen as there is very little shade on the playground.
Other amenities include a covered pavilion with restrooms. The pavilion can be rented for birthday parties. (Too bad Isaiah’s birthday is at the end of July when Georgia temperatures are hot, hot, and ridiculously hot.) The airport also has two restaurants on its premises: The 57th Fighter Group Restaurant and Down Wind Restaurant. I haven’t actually eaten at either so I can’t speak for the food (although I hear 57th has a pretty amazing brunch buffet), but they both have stellar views of the planes.
On behalf of Kimchi Belles and the entire crew, I’d like to thank you for reading this post and we look forward to seeing you on board again in the new future. Have a nice day!
