Its not every day that a patient asks to take a picture with the dentist after having three cracked fillings repaired, but John is never one to hide his feelings when he is exceptionally happy.
John’s 469 word love fest combined with his goofy smile and thumbs up (can’t blame it all on the juice, dear) seems a bit silly and makes you think, “C’mon. Theres no reason to get so mushy over decent chair side manners and gratitude that you didn’t get fleeced by the dentist,” but why the heck not? Many have dedicated internet words to lesser causes.
Having had a check up with him in January, I can say that Dr. Gabriel is simply an outstanding human being, dentist or no. You are inclined to like him, and that goes a long, long way in the medical industry. It is a trait that cannot be fabricated or made up: you either have “it” or you don’t.
Needless to say, we both instantly saw that in him.
The story, however, did not start with the first visit. It’s the way we found him that makes the telling all the better.
My fellow soccer mom friend, Maya, referred us to Dr. Gabriel one day last fall. She had me at “I love my dentist,” but further intrigued me with “oh, and He’s Shadi’s uncle.” Shadi is a soccer dad in our same group of soccer playing kiddos.
So, when I went in to see him, I made a point of saying Roenne plays soccer with his grand nephew, Beshoy–a really gifted player in the making. He says, “He better be good if he’s related to me! I used to be a professional player!” He goes on to tell me about his soccer playing sons, one of whom also went pro.
In the next breath he says the fillings my last two dentists insisted that I needed were completely unnecessary. They were simply worn down and stained areas. I grind my teeth like a maniac and I needed a mouth guard (like yesterday), but he encouraged me to try a $30 over-the-counter guard before shelling out for the custom one.
Blink, blink. Surprise, anger, happiness, relief. The good news is that we’ve found a keeper at long last.
So, it goes without saying that we were quite happy to run into the best dentist in Atlanta and his wife and kids at a party recently hosted by our friends Shadi and Kim (his wife). Lots of back slapping, boisterous laugher and happy greetings later, one of Dr. Gabriel’s sons, Michael says, “I recognize that little girl with the giant bun on her head; Arden? Do you remember me from Waumba Land?”
And the bun dips back to look up way up at Michael and bobs up and down in recognition: Michael was one of Arden’s former preschool teachers at Buckhead Church. We often see him in the halls when dropping her off, and so realized right away that he was one of the great volunteers who make church fun and meaningful for our 3 and 7 year olds. What a small world!
Its not every day that you get to party with the soccer moms and dads, dentist, and your kid’s church preschool teacher-at the same time!
Yup, that was the party with the water slide, which required swimwear, but Arden had to run around in her underpants and bloomers (that match a dress), and Roenne wore shorts and a t shirt…perhaps I had a mom fail and forgot to bring bathing suits. Oops.
It was a wild, naked, fabulous time, and oh…….I believe I was talking about Druid Hills Dental. Have I mentioned that we love our dentist?
