If you like our Kimchi Belles logo image, you’re in for a treat. Today’s post is dedicated to the artist who created it: the very talented and oh-so-sweet Mrs. Catherine (Cat) Kim. To be utterly transparent, Cat is my sister-in-law and I am so very lucky to have her as part of my family. Not only because of her crazy cute drawings and keen eye for design, but because she is genuine, sweet, and seriously cheesy. (She also happens to love cheese. A lot.)
A true southerner at heart, Cat was raised in Nashville, Tennessee but relocated to Atlanta after studying art at the University of Tennessee. She’s always loved drawing and doodling. It was only a matter of time before she decided to launch her own illustration brand, Cat+Mouse, to capture people’s lives in the form of whimsical illustrations. She specializes in custom portraits and fun renditions of some of her favorite brands (think Madewell and J.Crew). Check out some of my favorites from her work and our interview below!
How did you come up with the name Cat + Mouse?
Cat (me) + mouse (computer mouse/online presence)… My attempt at being clever. Hehehe!
What inspires you?
Things that make people smile. (Whether it’s color, pattern, shape, texture…)
Do you have specific blogs or designers that you seek? My favorite blogs are Cup of Jo, Design Love Fest, Jessica Hische, Design Sponge, and the EveryGirl! I love design, decor, and fashion. (Too bad my personal Pinterest isn’t my real closet!) And remember…things are always more fun with stripes, bright colors or glitter! 😉
Who inspires you?
People who try to make a positive impact in the world! From a design perspective, I find inspiration from weird/adorable trinkets to amazing illustrations from Hayao Miyazaki (Totoro), Mary Blair (Disney), Yoshitomo Nara… it’s hard to pick just one thing.
What are you most proud of?
My family and friends. I know it sounds cliche, but I’m seriously surrounded by the best people. [She is obviously talking about me.]
Best gift ever received?
An SNES (Super Nintendo). I can’t even tell ya how many hours my sister and I spent playing it. My favorite game is Donkey Kong Country. Hands down.
What did you have for breakfast today?
A Krispy Kreme Doughnut… or 2. [Another reason we get along so well.]
Who is the last person you texted?
My husband, John. (About what gift I stole during a white elephant game at the time! Cackles.) What was the gift? I stole a shatterproof door hanging basketball set for the huz! ;). This will be especially handy with his ACL surgery coming up.
And finally the most important question: toilet paper roll preference: over or under?
Definitely over! 🙂
Thanks so much to Cat for her time and contributions to this blog! Check out her Etsy site for work on sale or to request custom portraits. I often seek Cat out for all my graphic design needs since my clip art skills are so sad and only go so far (nowhere).
