Atlanta has no shortage of culinary institutions that serve up a good southern style fried chicken. Whether it’s a fast food chain like Popeyes, a high end version from Watershed, or a new player in town like American Food and Beverage, there’s plenty of fried chicken to go around and satisfy your craving. That being said, there’s one place in Atlanta that stands out in my mind for having the best fried chicken in town: Busy Bee Cafe. Busy Bee is THE place I go when I have a serious hankering for soul food in the form of crispy fried chicken and sugary sweet tea.
Disclaimer: I must confess that while Busy Bee has the best fried chicken in Atlanta, the best fried chicken I’ve ever eaten in my short lifetime definitely goes to Willie Mae’s in New Orleans.
I was first introduced to Busy Bee in 2009 when a friend of mine initiated a fried chicken tour of Atlanta. Many establishments such as Bojangles’, South City Kitchen, Colonnade, Krispy Krunchy Chicken, and Matthews Cafeteria were visited. In the end, the heralded winner of the tour was Busy Bee Cafe. So don’t just take it from me, take it from this group of fried chicken loving Koreans:
While searching through my photo archives (okay, Facebook), I found yet another picture of a visit to Busy Bee, circa 2012.
At Atlanta tradition since 1947, Busy Bee has perfected the art of a good fried chicken. Perfectly battered in seasoned flour and deep fried in peanut oil, it is the perfect balance of crispy, salty (but not too salty), juicy chicken. If you go to Busy Bee, just get the fried chicken platter, which comes with your choice of 2 sides, and rolls/cornbread. Once I went with a friend who ordered the pork chops. Although it was good … c’mon man!
Busy Bee not only has the best fried chicken in the city, but it is also completely unpretentious. No need to worry about what to wear or valeting your car (they have a private lot). So what are you waiting for? Go for yourself so that in the future when someone asks you, “Who has the best fried chicken in Atlanta?” You can confidently say without any hesitation, “Busy Bee Cafe!”
